Filing a VAT return in Dubai

UAE tax policy is more lenient and has lower rates than in many countries. But to run a successful business in Dubai without fines, it's important to comply with legal requirements and not delay filing your reports.

Mountain Accounting and Bookkeeping LLC helps companies make sense of their tax burden and takes the bureaucratic procedures off your hands. Our UAE tax experts review your books, prepare returns, file applications, and answer any FTA questions when needed.

What is a VAT return? Who needs to file it, and when?

It's filed by every legal entity registered for VAT — registration is mandatory once annual income exceeds AED 375,000. If you're already registered with the FTA, you likely need to pay VAT. You can reach out to us for a free consultation — our specialists will review your case.

A VAT return is a summary report of all the purchases and sales a company made during the period. You also need to declare receipt of VAT-exempt supplies. The main source of data is the invoices accumulated over the month or quarter.

The return is filed monthly or quarterly depending on the terms of FTA registration. The frequency is stated on the certificate.

The filing deadline is the 28th of the month following the end of the period. So with monthly filing, the first return of the year must be filed by 28 February, and with quarterly filing, by 28 April.

Frequently asked questions
What documents are needed to register for VAT?
The trade licence, incorporation documents, the owner's/director's passport and Emirates ID, bank details, and the company's turnover data. We'll confirm the exact list after a free consultation on your case.
What if the company had no activity during the reporting period?
The return still needs to be filed — with zero figures. Skipping the filing, even with no transactions, leads to a late-filing fine.
Can VAT be reclaimed from the state budget?
Yes, if input VAT exceeds output VAT for the period. We'll help carry out the refund procedure correctly — this service is arranged separately.
What is the VAT return filing deadline?
The 28th of the month following the end of the period. With monthly filing, that's the 28th of every month; with quarterly filing, the 28th of the month after the quarter. The frequency is stated on your registration certificate.
